How To Store Cannabis Seeds

Storing cannabis seeds properly is important to ensure their viability for future planting. If stored properly they can remain viable for decades.

Here are some key guidelines for storing cannabis seeds:

Note: we do not recommend placing seeds in refrigerators as they can freeze and thaw - which is BAD for seeds.

1. Temperature

  • Cool and stable temperature: Cannabis seeds should be stored in a cool, dry place. The ideal temperature range is between 40°F (4°C) and 60°F (15°C). Avoid exposing them to high heat, as it can degrade the seeds over time.
  • Avoid fluctuation: Try to keep the temperature stable to prevent the seeds from experiencing sudden changes that could damage them.

2. Humidity

  • Low humidity: Cannabis seeds should be stored in an environment with low humidity to prevent mold or mildew growth. The ideal relative humidity is around 20% to 30%.
  • Desiccants: Use silica gel packets or other desiccants to absorb excess moisture in storage containers. With our larger seed orders we do include desiccant packs.

3. Light

  • Darkness: Seeds should be kept in a dark place, as exposure to light can damage them over time. Store them in opaque containers or inside a dark box or drawer.
  • UV protection: UV light can degrade the quality of seeds, so it’s essential to store them away from light sources.

4. Containers

  • Airtight containers: Use airtight containers to protect the seeds from moisture and air exposure. Glass jars with tight-fitting lids, vacuum-sealed bags, or Mylar bags are great options.
  • Cool storage: If you need to store them for an extended period, consider using a freezer-safe container and store them in the freezer. However, make sure to keep them in an airtight container to prevent condensation when taken out.

5. Short-term Storage (Months to a Year)

  • Room temperature: If you plan to use the seeds within a year or so, room temperature storage (away from light and heat) should be sufficient. Use airtight containers and keep them in a dark, cool space. The bottom of a closet is an easy one. Just shoot for somewhere that stays consistent.

5. Long-term Storage

  • Cold Storage: Cannabis seeds can last for several years if kept in a cool environment. We keep our seeds in a vault that remains at a constant 40°F
    • Place seeds in an airtight container or vacuum-sealed bag.
    • Store them in a basement or cellar that remains a constant temperature.
    • When you're ready to plant them, let them room temperature before opening the container to prevent moisture from condensing inside.

7. Labeling

  • Label your seeds: If you're storing multiple strains, label the containers with strain name, harvest date, and any other relevant information to avoid confusion when you're ready to plant.

8. Handling

  • Minimize handling: Avoid handling the seeds too much to prevent oils and moisture from your hands from contaminating them. Use tweezers or gloves when necessary.

By following these guidelines, you can maximize the shelf life of your cannabis seeds and maintain their ability to germinate when you're ready to plant.
