For those seeking test results on trimmed flowers, we recommend visiting a flower retailers website such as Fern Valley Farms, Horn Creek Hemp, Rogue Origin, or Tweedle Farms. We cannot guarantee finished flower results, so we do not post them.
All of our CBD varieties will pass USDA hemp sampling requirements for total THC if tested around 30 days before harvest - and with our high CBD varieties this needs to be done by the end of the 4th week of flower. In most cases this is the end of the 2nd week of August, but later planting dates can delay flower onset. We say sample when the flowers are around the size of a thumb.
CBD Seeds and Compliance
Growing varieties that produce high CBD will virtually always yield finished flower that has more than 0.3% total THC - if accurately tested. The gene that is responsible for CBD production in plants, the CBDA synthase, also produces THCA throughout the flowering cycle. So as it makes CBD, it also makes THC - and at a consistent ratio of around 25-28 parts CBD to 1 part THC. This ratio cannot be altered by growing conditions, harvest date, or any other factors.
For example, if you have a finished and dried flower with 28% CBD, you can reasonably expect it to have around 1% total THC. If you have a flower that has 14% CBD, you can expect it to have around 0.5% total THC.
Plants sampled throughout flower show the same ratio, just differing quantities of both CBD and THC. With this in mind, a CBD flowers on a crop wide average, cannot have more than around 7% CBD before it also has more than 0.3% total THC. This is why sampling 30 days before harvest is important as both the CBD and THC numbers raise quickly in the plants final weeks of flower.
Many of our varieties such as Hawaiian Haze, Lifter, Sour Chem, Sour Lifter, Sour Suver Haze, Special Sauce, and Suver Haze frequently hit at or above 20% CBD and around 0.8% THC. Sampling at the correct time is very important - around the end of week 4 of flower. As mentioned, this is true with all high CBD seeds, and not just ours.
Selling High CBD Flower
With the current USDA loophole, as long as your flower has below 0.3% Delta 9 THC it is deemed hemp for legal sales - but some states have stricter legislations in place. Look into your local laws and ordinances before planting.
Growing THCA Seeds
THCA seeds, which are the same as THC seeds, cannot be grown as hemp. Even sampled in their vegetative states, THCA dominant plants leaves often have higher than 0.3% total THC. A week into flower and that number is usually around 1%. There is no way to pass pre-harvest compliance tests with THCA/THC seeds so do not even try. But we do have some really nice seed varieties here.
Selling THCA Flower
THCA flower is just regular THC flower. All THC flower contains mostly THCA and the plant itself does not produce Delta 9 THC - which is what is the compound that gets users high. Delta 9 THC is a degradation bi-product of THCA and converts through heat. Fresh cannabis picked right off the plant will rarely ever have Delta 9 THC - but shortly after harvest small portions convert. If you choose to sell THCA flower, just realize it is just regular THC flower, and it will likely have above 0.3% Delta 9 when it reaches the shelves of shops.
