At GTR Seeds, we believe the future of cannabis breeding belongs to those willing to do the work: growing plants, studying their genetics, testing new ideas, and developing varieties that offer something genuinely different.
We're not particularly interested in chasing social media trends. We'd rather spend our time in the greenhouse, the field, and the laboratory. After all, the grass is usually greener in real life.
That philosophy has guided our work at Oregon CBD and GTR Seeds for more than a decade. And some of our most exciting achievements are the result of years of research that most growers never get to see.
From contributing to a landmark cannabis pangenome published in Nature to developing new triploid and minor-cannabinoid varieties, our breeding program continues to push the boundaries of what cannabis genetics can offer.
A Landmark Cannabis Pangenome Published in Nature
One of our proudest accomplishments is contributing to the groundbreaking 2025 study, Domesticated cannabinoid synthases amid a wild mosaic cannabis pangenome, published in Nature.
This research brought together scientists from Oregon CBD, the Salk Institute, Oregon State University, and other collaborating institutions to examine cannabis genetic diversity at an unprecedented level of detail.
A pangenome goes beyond a single reference genome by comparing genetic information across multiple individuals. This allows researchers to identify genetic variation that might otherwise remain hidden.
The study provided important insights into:
-
Cannabinoid synthase genes: The genetic machinery involved in producing cannabinoids such as THC and CBD.
-
Structural genetic variation: Differences in genome organization that conventional reference-based approaches may miss.
-
Cannabis domestication: How selective breeding has shaped the genetic diversity found in modern cannabis.
-
Future breeding opportunities: Genetic information that may eventually support more precise selection of desirable traits.
We're especially proud that Oregon CBD contributed genetic material and scientific expertise to this collaborative research.
Many of the maternal breeding lines behind our new releases were also represented in the pangenome research, connecting the genetics we work with every day to a much broader scientific effort.
We also want to recognize the preservation work of CSI Humboldt, whose legacy cannabis genetics contributed to the diversity represented in this work.
Turning Scientific Knowledge Into Better Cannabis Seeds
Publishing research is exciting, but our ultimate goal is to put scientific understanding to work.
At GTR Seeds, that means developing cannabis varieties with improved agricultural performance, distinctive cannabinoid profiles, and traits that growers can actually use.
Our breeding program combines traditional plant selection with an expanding understanding of cannabis genetics.
The pangenome itself does not prove that any particular variety will yield more or produce more resin. Instead, it provides a valuable foundation for understanding the genetic diversity available to breeders and developing better tools for future research.
That distinction matters. Good breeding requires more than identifying interesting genes. It requires years of crossing, selection, growing, testing, and evaluating plants under real-world conditions.
Expanding the Possibilities of Triploid Cannabis
One of the most visible results of our breeding work has been the development of commercial triploid cannabis seeds.
Unlike conventional diploid cannabis plants, which contain two sets of chromosomes, triploids contain three.
This difference can substantially reduce fertility, making triploid plants less likely to produce seeds when exposed to pollen.
Through extensive breeding and selection, we've also developed triploid varieties exhibiting exceptional flower density, resin production, aromatic complexity, and agricultural performance.
Our expanding catalog includes triploid genetics across multiple cannabinoid types, including CBD, CBG, CBDV, CBGV, and Type I cannabis.

Introducing New Possibilities in Minor Cannabinoids
Some of our most exciting breeding achievements involve cannabinoids that have historically received far less attention than THC and CBD.
Our breeding program has expanded into several specialized cannabinoid categories.
CBGV: Exploring a Rare Cannabinoid
Among our most significant introductions are CBGV-rich cannabis varieties.
CBGV (cannabigerivarin) is a relatively uncommon cannabinoid, and developing plants that consistently produce substantial concentrations presents unique breeding challenges.
Our CBGV seed collection includes varieties such as Triangle Kush CBGV Seedless and Skunkberry CBGV Seedless, representing years of work developing specialized cannabinoid profiles.
CBG: Building on Our Breeding History
CBG genetics have been central to our breeding program for years.
We continue to expand our CBG seed collection with new varieties emphasizing distinctive aromas, flower quality, and agricultural performance.
Our goal isn't simply to produce CBG-rich plants. It's to develop genetics that combine cannabinoid production with the traits growers expect from exceptional cannabis.
CBDV: Taking Varin Genetics Further
CBDV (cannabidivarin) represents another area of continuing development.
Our triploid CBDV varieties, including Castaway CBDV Seedless and Pine Walker Seedless, demonstrate how specialized cannabinoid breeding can be combined with modern triploid genetics.
These varieties expand the options available to growers interested in producing cannabinoid profiles beyond conventional CBD.
Bringing New Genetics to Growers
Scientific research and plant breeding only become meaningful when the resulting genetics make it into the hands of growers.
Our breeding program continues to introduce new varieties across several categories, from high-CBD hemp and aromatic CBG cultivars to rare minor-cannabinoid genetics and resin-rich Type I hybrids.

Every new release represents a substantial investment in breeding, selection, evaluation, and seed production.
We're proud to offer genetics developed through our own breeding program rather than simply repackaging someone else's work.
Thank You for Supporting Independent Cannabis Research
Research isn't free. Neither are greenhouses, field trials, laboratories, or the electricity that keeps everything running.
The growers who purchase our seeds help support the work that makes these advances possible.
We're proud of our contributions to peer-reviewed cannabis research, but we're equally proud of the practical genetics that have come from years of experimentation and persistence.
We believe scientific knowledge should help move the entire cannabis industry forward, and we're excited to continue contributing to that progress.
Thanks for helping us keep the lights on and the creativity flowering.
Now get outside, grow something wonderful, and keep making the world a better place.

I agree. Social media is negative. Can you recommend an outdoor strains for Michigan state? Please. I like to grow organic. You have great products. Just looking to see what you suggest.
