Project TAC Update: Breeding Cannabis for Maximum Cannabinoid Production

How much cannabinoid content can a cannabis plant produce? That's one of the big questions we're working to answer through Project TAC (Total Active Cannabinoids), an ongoing research and breeding initiative at GTR Seeds.

Our goal is to identify and combine the genetic markers responsible for maximum cannabinoid production, ultimately developing two highly potent, genetically stable autoflowering breeding lines: one THCAS homozygous and one CBDAS homozygous. These lines will serve as valuable pollen donors in our commercial breeding program, helping us develop future generations of high-performing cannabis seeds.

Project TAC: 2026 Research Update

Our research began in 2023 by crossing a parent plant (P1) that has consistently tested at or above 30% Total Active Cannabinoids (TAC) with a day-neutral (autoflowering) plant from our established CBD breeding program.

Building on published cannabis genetic research, we're investigating regions of the genome associated with cannabinoid potency and working to better understand how these traits are inherited.

In fall 2026, we completed our initial evaluation of 41 F1 offspring, along with simultaneous backcrosses to the original high-potency parent. These crosses represent an important step toward identifying and concentrating the genetic traits associated with exceptional cannabinoid production.

In the video below, we share a behind-the-scenes look at our breeding process, the initial results from our F1 population, and the next steps in this long-term research project.

Why does this matter for growers? By better understanding the genetics behind cannabinoid production, we hope to develop more consistent, higher-potency varieties across multiple cannabinoid types, including THC, CBD, CBG, and other specialty cannabinoids.

At GTR Seeds, our breeding program goes beyond developing new flavors and aromas. We're investing in the science needed to push the boundaries of cannabis genetics and improve the seeds available to growers.

Follow along as Project TAC continues to uncover the genetic potential of cannabis.
